A debate has started on the Indian opening pair for the ICC T20 World Cup 2022 after Virat Kohli’s sensational hundred in the Asia Cup 2022 match against Afghanistan at the Dubai International Stadium.
Playing as an opener in Rohit Sharma’s absence, Kohli amassed an unbeaten 122 of 61 balls, laced with 12 fours and 6 sixes. With Virat in form, some cricket experts want him to open with Rohit Sharma in the global event in Australia.
However, former teammates Gautam Gambhir and Virender Sehwag are against the idea of forming a new opening pair when Rahul scored runs in the final contest of the Asia Cup.
“There is no need for a debate on this. KL Rahul and Rohit Sharma should be preferred in Australia, considering their record and what they bring to the table. Just because of one century, Virat shouldn’t be promoted as his best position is number 3,” said Gambhir.
Speaking to Cricbuzz, former India opener Virender Sehwag explained why Virat Kohli can’t play as an opening batter.
“By this logic, Rahul Dravid should have played as an opener. Sachin should have opened in Tests. One or two good innings don’t make him a good opener,” said Sehwag.
Meanwhile, Harbhajan Singh said no to their choice of openers. He wants Virat to open with Rohit in the World Cup. “Virat played well and deserves to open the innings with Rohit. Rahul can bat in the middle-order.”
