The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced the squad for the T20 World Cup 2022.
Mohammed Shami was not included in the team despite his performance in Australia.
It has been revealed that Rohit Sharma and Rahul Dravid were against his inclusion in the group and wanted R Ashwin in his place.
As per a report in Insidesport, the selectors were stuck on Shami and Ashwin. However, the head coach and captain favored the off-spinner over the pacer.
The report further adds that Dravid and Rohit were impressed with the variety Ashwin offers.
On the other hand, Shami has been picked for the T20I series against South Africa and Australia.
“The selectors still have doubts about the fitness of Jasprit Bumrah and Harshal Patel, and that’s why Shami has been kept on as a standby player,” former national selector Saba Karim had earlier told Sportstar.
He hasn’t played T20I cricket for India since last year’s T20 World Cup.
