Stubborn Stokes, Ripper Rashid: Player ratings for England vs Sri Lanka T20 World Cup 2022 match

England beat Sri Lanka by four wickets in match number 39 of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2022 Super 12 match at the Sydney Cricket Ground on Saturday, November 5. With the close win, the Englishmen confirmed their place in the semi-finals from Group 1. New Zealand had already reached the semis on Friday, and with England booking, the second slot, defending champions Australia got knocked out. 

Coming back to the game, Sri Lanka batted first after winning the toss but only managed 141/8 on the board. In response, England were 75/0 loss at one stage. But they crumbled to 111/5 before sneaking home to a nervous win in 19.4 overs. Here are the player ratings for England vs Sri Lanka T20 World Cup 2022 match. 

England 

Adil Rashid (9/10): Claimed only one wicket, but that was the big one of Pathum Nissanka, who was batting really well on 67. Conceded merely 16 runs in his four overs to stifle the Sri Lankan batting.

Ben Stokes (8.5/10): Guided England home with a mature 42 not out after a mid-innings batting wobble. Hit only two fours but ran brilliantly between the wickets. Dismissed Charith Asalanka with the ball.

Alex Hales (8/10): Gave England a terrific start, smacking 47 in 30 balls. His blitzkrieg ensured Stokes could take his time in the end. His selection after Jonny Bairstow got ruled out has proved to be a masterstroke.

Mark Wood (7/10): Impressed with his pace. Claimed three wickets towards the end of Sri Lanka’s innings to ensure they did not get the final flourish.

Jos Buttler (6/10): Scored a handy 28 off 23 and featured in a 75-run opening-wicket stand with Alex Hales. Could not carry on, though.

Sam Curran (5/10): Got the wicket of Dhananjaya de Silva. Gave away only 27 runs in his four overs. Was dismissed for 6 in the chase.

Chris Woakes (4.5/10): Got the wicket of Kusal Mendis but was slightly expensive, conceding 24 runs in three overs. Hit the winning boundary.

Liam Livingstone (3/10): Took a terrific catch in the deep to dismiss Kusal Mendis. Contributed only 4 with the bat.

Harry Brook (1/10): Was out for 4 as England’s innings wobbled.

Moeen Ali (1/10): Made only 1. Chipped a simple catch off Dhananjaya de Silva to leave England in trouble.

Dawid Malan (No Rating): Did not bat due to injury.

Sri Lanka 

Pathum Nissanka (8.5/10): Was the only one who looked comfortable against England’s bowlers. Played a wonderful innings, striking two fours and five sixes. Until he was at the crease, Lanka had hopes of posting a good total.

Wanindu Hasaranga (7.5/10): Failed with the bat but made an impact with the ball again. Dismissed both England openers to bring Sri Lanka back into the game.

Dhananjaya de Silva (7/10): Also could not do much with the bat but delivered an impressive spell with the ball. Got the wickets of Harry Brook and Moeen Ali to finish with 2/24.

Lahiru Kumara (6.5/10): Also picked up two wickets, sending back Liam Livingstone and Sam Curran. But bowled a poor delivery in the last over to concede the winning four.

Maheesh Theekshana (6/10): Was economical and gave away only 22 runs in his four overs, but Sri Lanka needed wickets from him.

Bhanuka Rajapaksa (5/10): Got a start and scored a run-a-ball 22 before being dismissed in the last over.

Kusal Mendis (4/10): Looked good for his 18, but needed to carry on.

Charith Asalanka (2.5/10): Scored only 8 and played a poor stroke to get out.

Dasun Shanaka (1/10): The Sri Lankan captain made only three runs. Did not bowl.

Chamika Karunaratne (1/10): Was bowled for a duck. Did not bowl.

Kasun Rajitha (0.5/10): Proved extremely expensive with the ball. Went for 40 in three overs and was wicketless.
